Chevrolet C10

The archetypal classic Chevy pickup — three distinct generations, all with strong collector followings.

The C10 name covers Chevrolet's half-ton, two-wheel-drive pickup across three very different-looking generations: the 1960–66 first generation, the 1967–72 "Action Line" trucks (widely considered the best-looking of the bunch), and the 1973–87 "Square Body" generation. All three share the same basic recipe — a simple, durable body-on-frame truck with wide aftermarket support — which has made the C10 one of the most accessible entry points into classic-truck ownership.

History

The immediate predecessor to the C10 name, the 1958–59 Apache, introduced the "Task Force" body generation's rounder, more modern styling and a wraparound windshield — visually and mechanically close enough to the following C10 that collectors generally group it with the same era.

The first-generation C10 (1960–66) introduced Chevrolet's new independent front suspension for trucks and a lower, wider stance than the previous generation. Early years used a torsion-bar front end that was replaced by coil springs partway through the run.

The 1967–72 "Action Line" generation is the most collected today, prized for its clean, uncluttered styling — flatter hood, thinner pillars, and a dash design shared loosely with the period Camaro. The CST (Custom Sport Truck) package added bucket seats and extra brightwork for buyers who wanted a truck that didn't look like one.

The 1973–87 "Square Body" generation (badged C10 through 1987, later renamed C1500) moved to a boxier, more modern-looking cab and became the best-selling generation by volume, which keeps parts support excellent today. Square Bodies were slower to appreciate than the 1967–72 trucks but have become highly sought after in the last decade.

Upscale trim package with bucket seats, extra brightwork, and better sound insulation — the most desirable trim on 1967–72 trucks.

Cheyenne / Cheyenne Super

The top-tier trim on Square Body trucks, comparable in spirit to the CST — chrome bumpers, upgraded interior, exterior badging.

Big Ten / Big Dooley

Heavier-duty half-ton variants offered in the 1970s with reinforced frames and suspension for higher payload.

K5 Blazer

The removable-top SUV variant built on the same C/K chassis, sharing the pickup's drivetrain and much of its front-end sheet metal.

Silverado

Introduced in 1975 as the top-tier Square Body trim (later becoming Chevrolet's standalone truck nameplate in 1999) — the direct equivalent to GMC's Sierra trim/nameplate transition.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

Cab corners and bed floor are the primary rust spots

Check cab corners, rocker panels, and the wood/steel bed floor closely — these trucks were work vehicles and rust is the #1 value killer.

Confirm the frame matches the generation

Frame swaps between generations are common in the restomod community; if originality matters to you, verify the frame and body are period-correct together.

Parts support varies significantly by generation

Square Body (1973–87) parts are the most plentiful and cheapest; first-gen (1960–66) parts are the hardest to source.

Check for prior 4WD-to-2WD or engine swaps
