AMC SC/Rambler

The Scrambler β€” AMC's budget muscle car that shocked the competition.

The SC/Rambler (nicknamed the Scrambler) was a one-year-only collaboration between AMC and Hurst Performance that stuffed a 390 cubic inch V8 into the humble Rambler Rogue body. Built to a tight price point, it ran the quarter mile in the low 14s stock β€” faster than many better-known muscle cars of the era. Its wild red, white, and blue graphics made it impossible to ignore.

History

AMC partnered with Hurst Performance to build the SC/Rambler as a limited-edition drag-strip special. The formula was simple: the lightest available AMC body, the biggest available engine, and a Hurst 4-speed shifter. Approximately 1,512 were built across two graphic schemes β€” the original 'A' scheme with a bold red and white paint with a large arrow graphic, and the slightly more restrained 'B' scheme. Both used the same 315 hp 390 V8 with a cold-air hood scoop.

Notable Versions

Scheme A

Original graphic β€” bold horizontal red stripe with large arrow pointing to the hood scoop. The rarer and more desirable of the two.

Scheme B

Revised graphics with red hood and trunk, blue and white body. Slightly more produced than Scheme A.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

Production was tiny β€” fakes exist

Only 1,512 were built. Verify the VIN decode and door data plate carefully; clones from base Rogue coupes are known to exist.

AMC parts support is thin

The 390 engine has reasonable aftermarket support but AMC-specific body parts are scarce. The AMC community and specialty suppliers are your best resources.

Original graphics are hard to find

Correct SC/Rambler stripe graphics are reproduced but quality varies. Original-paint cars carry a significant premium.
