The Rebel Machine was a one-year-only special edition built to prove AMC was serious about performance. Only 2,326 were produced, all with the 340 hp 390 V8, a functional hood scoop, and a red-white-blue paint scheme or white-and-red combination. It ran the quarter mile in the mid-14s from the factory — honest performance from an honest small company that couldn't afford pretense.
History
AMC's marketing team designed the Rebel Machine as a counterattack to the muscle car market's big names. The 390 V8 was upgraded with a specific camshaft, carburetor, and exhaust manifolds for 340 hp — the Rebel Machine rating, not the standard 390's output. A factory-optional 4-speed manual, Hurst shifter, and heavy-duty suspension made it a complete performance package.
