AMC Javelin
The underdog pony car — Mark Donohue drove it to Trans-Am championships against factory Mustangs and Camaros.
The Javelin was American Motors' pony car entry, and it competed credibly with the Mustang and Camaro despite AMC's limited resources. Driven by Roger Penske and Mark Donohue, the Javelin won the Trans-Am Manufacturers Championship in 1971 and 1972 — beating factory-backed teams from Ford and Chevrolet. The Javelin AMX with the 401 V8 is the most collectible variant.
History
AMC introduced the Javelin in 1968 as a direct competitor to the Mustang and Camaro. Despite AMC's smaller budget, the Javelin offered styling, performance, and handling that compared favorably with its competitors. The 390 V8 option delivered competitive performance, and the Trans-Am racing program gave the car credibility that money could not buy.
The 1971 redesign produced a more muscular, flared-fender body with the Mark Donohue tribute edition (black stripes, AMX badges) celebrating the racing success. The 401 V8 replaced the 390 for 1971, producing 330 hp in an era when competitors were losing power to emissions regulations. The 1974 final Javelin is a clean, undervalued muscle car with strong performance.
