History
Launched in 1966 as the Duetto, the original Spider used Pininfarina's rounded boat-tail rear design — a genuinely distinctive shape that, while later revised, remains the most sought-after Spider styling among collectors today.
The 1970 redesign squared off the boat-tail rear into a more conventional Kamm-tail shape — a practical change that improved trunk space and rear visibility, though many enthusiasts still prefer the original Duetto's more distinctive lines.
US safety and emissions regulations progressively reshaped the car through the 1970s and 80s, most visibly with large rubber bumper guards added in 1974 — the Spider nonetheless remained in production, with periodic styling refreshes, all the way through 1993.
